The Large Munsterlander is a working gundog, they come from the HPR group of gundogs, this means they HUNT, POINT AND RETRIEVE, in other words the Large Munsterlander does it all.
In my experience they are a breed that will work tirelessly doing what they love most. Some can be a little too keen, all of mine work, some are just steadier than others. They are what I class as a primitive breed and by that I mean their natural working instincts are still very near the surface.
When choosing stud dogs for any of my girls I always go to proven working dogs. It is very important to me that all Blitzans keep their natural working instincts. My dogs are worked in the field and are out amongst game most days. Munsterlanders make excellent all round working dogs but are happiest in cover and water. They are also used for Deer stalking (which mine have not done) and there are a few Blitzans out there who do work as Hawking dogs which they also excel at.

The Large Munsterlander:

They cover a wide area of ground at quite a speed, quartering the ground ahead of you, no matter what the weather or conditions they will hunt and find game, they are a determined breed but most of all a biddable breed, make sure you train your dog to work for you, they will want to and respond to kind gentle training commands. Munsterlanders don't go for a walk they for a Hunt, it is important to make sure they hunt for you, don't let them start hunting for themselves or you will find they will hunt further and further away from you. Even if you don't wish to work your Munsterlander you can still channel their hunting instincts, just get them to hunt for you. They are not a breed that has been divided into two, there are no Munsterlanders that don't have some working instincts, yes some have a much stronger instinct than others but they are still a primitive breed, by that I mean their working instinct is still very much at the surface. Logi may be a highly successful show dog, but he can just as easily go out and do a days work, in fact he does, all mine do and can.

The Large Munsterlanders:

When the Large Munsterlander comes across game they will acknowledge this by pointing, they should hold this point until the handler gives the command to flush the game. Upon the bird being shot they should then sit and wait for the command to 'Retrieve'. A Munsterlander will lift the front foot for feather and the back foot for fur, not all do this, which is not a fault but the majority will, certainly our young Tetra does, as does Logi!! They really look quite stunning when on point and acknowledging game.

The Large Munsterlander:
Whether you are wanting to work heath land, woodland or water ways, the Large Munsterlander will give 100% effort, just make sure you get your basic training in first, and don't rush the training programme, mine are 2 years old before I have them out on busy shoots, take it slowly or they will get too hot! Munsterlanders also make excellent Falconers dogs, in fact there isn't a job that a Munsterlander couldn't do!!!
You don't have to work the Munsterlander on a shoot, but they do need mental stimulation of some sort and an activity to keep them occupied, but also remember they do not go for walks they go for 'Hunts', where ever they are. Not a breed for the house proud!! They do shed their coats and they are Mud Magnets, they love to wallow, and love the water, often the two go hand in hand with them in the muddiest, stinkiest puddles!!! Scroll down to see what I mean.......
